Ken, you must be one heck of a food lover because you seem to know virtually every food joint in Ipoh! Through this forum, I have come to know of other great places to eat in Ipoh which hitherto were unknown to me. Thanks! While still on food, the best wantan mee I know of surely must be the stall that used to be operated by "the 3 spinsters" in Menglembu. Apparently these 3 ladies initially swore to each other that they'll not marry; one eventually did, and she was penalized by the other 2. But I think it all turned out well for in later years, there was this man who appeared at the stall to help, which I presumed was the husband. There are other wantan mee stalls in Menglembu now, styled after the original "3 spinstes" one, and all of them are pretty good. I am told that one of the stalls is related to the original, but I dont know which is the one. Also in Menglembu is Wah Chai, another great eating place specializing in sea food. The place is always packed in the evenings. When soft shelled crabs are in season, go order them! You are absolutely right to say that roast duck is a specialty of Hong Kong chefs. With these chefs going around the world, they have helped make great Chinese cooking even greater. IMHO, the best Chinese food in the world today though, is in Australia, especially Melbourne. Blessed with great fresh produce in the hands of great chefs from Hong Kong, what more can you ask? Cheaper cost of eating perhaps, because the cost of eating out in Australia has gone through the roof, and especially for us poor visiting Malaysians. But the best roast duck in the world is not in Oz... that credit goes to (again IMHO) a Chinese restaurant in Bayswater, London. It is not unusual for a queue to start forming an hour before the restaurant opens for lunch. I am told that the reason why the ducks are so "juicy" is because they come from Ireland, where the climate is excellent for rearing them. I am fortunate in that my work allows me to travel quite a bit, to taste food from many parts of the world. But at the end of the day, it is always good to be back home in Malaysia where the food remains great and affordable. Happy eating. wy |
