Thank you Kayes, for the snap. Isn't French Bakery next to Paris Bakery, both near the former Grand cinema? If so, then I no longer recognise the shop opposite! I concede that a motorbike is more convenient (and less tiring) than a bicycle to cart around a whole lot of bread, pastries and snacks. By the bye, I think Raleigh was a more upmarket make of bicycles; the more common one was the Seven Up brand. For the record, my bike was a Raleigh Chopper. Having said the above, I still nurture fond memories of the old method of hawking. So let me drink a belated toast to the kuih man who carried his stock-in-trade in two woven baskets, supported by a shoulder-borne flat wooden pole, and the pedal-power chendol, prawn mee, beef ball noodles, chicken koay teow and tai-kau-meen sellers. p |
