Hello Phoebe,

Thanks for your great fellow-up piece on Kok Kee, with all the bells and whistles about Green Fern, Federal Bowl and the Latin Quarter. I remember when that complex was first opened, it created so much fanfare that everyone wants to see and be seen
there. If I remember correctly, there is also a small shopping center in the basement, and that was the first time Ipoh was exposed to the concept of shopping malls.

I also appreciate the mention of Luen Seng, a restaurant I have patronized many times before; but I just cannot recall its name until you eloquently described it as "Kok Kee's poor cousin".

The behavior of some of those so-called "big shots" is simply deplorable and unacceptable. When I was the manager of Cathay Cinema from 1981 to 1984, I have also witnessed such blatant display of senseless arrogance on several occasions. I wonder if the antics of these self-centered ego-centrics have toned down in this day and age.

I guess it is an accepted practice for garbage collectors to swarm around for ang pows on festive occasions like Chinese New Year. The funny thing is that even in the States, cash is also given in money holder to newspaper delivery persons and garbage collectors. So you see, these practices are very pervasive and it actually transcends national boundaries!

Once again, thanks for that thought-provoking piece. It certainly unlatched those flood gates and let my memories flow
like a river of no return.

Warmest regards and best wishes from farway USA.

Ken.
