Hi Ann, Yes! Empty (not old lah) condensed milk cans were used to 'pack' Mamak soups and kuah satay. A piece of string is then tied around the can, with a length forming a handle so you can hold it like a little hand bag. But careful you don't swing it while you walk! No, no, no! The restaurant behind Sarmukh Road and facing Kampar Road was Golden Jubilee. Next to it was the AOG church. I think Golden Jubilee has long since gone down the same path taken by other old and spacious buildings – morphing into car and furniture showrooms! Nyet, nyet, nyet! Kwong Chow was in New Town, sandwiched between Odeon and Grand. Egg custard came from the coffee shop in Old Town which also served 'Western breakfast' like scrambled eggs. I don't think egg custard was served with gula melaka. More like treacle or carmelised sugar? During evenings, the same shop served steam boat (tah pin loh). In the daytime, you can also have your 'ngah choi kai si hor fun' carted there from Kong Heng next door, if there were no seats left. Yipes. I fear I reminisce too much. Oh, stop me, I'm like a kid in a candy store! p |
