In the 70s, Park Hotel was famous for its steamed prawns and crabs flavoured with cognac, dipped in soy sauce before eating. Soirées only. If I remember correctly, Tanjong Tualang was also famous for its crustaceans. Another popular evening restaurant in Ipoh was Kwong Chow, but that joint burnt down decades ago. Their egg tarts were legend. In the days before styrofoam, plastic bags and fancy boxes, the take-away egg tarts were packed in cigarette cartons! Four to a box, I think it was. Lee How Fook at Yau Tet Shin served the best morning tim sum and unsweetened chrysanthemum tea. But that restaurant is also RIP, I think. Nostalgia trivia time: Before plastic bags became ubiquitous, how were take-away sup kambing, ayam or daging packed? Hint: The peanut sauce for satay was packed the same way. p |
